Bensalem, Pa 19020 History Pen
Ryn Mansion has graced the banks of the Delaware River for over 250 years.
Situated on over 100 acres, with a 2,000-foot, tree-lined drive leading to
beautiful river vistas and gardens, Pen Ryn captures the charm and
nostalgia of a bygone era. The
center mansion section dates to 1744 when Abraham Bickley, a
wealthy shipping merchant and colonial Philadelphia alderman, selected
from his vast land holdings this beautiful location for his country
residence.
In 1893, Lucy Wharton
Drexel, with the immense banking wealth of her family behind her,
purchased Pen Ryn and greatly expanded the mansion by adding an art
gallery, library, servant quarters, and carriage house.
After
years of abandonment in the late 1980s, the Pen Ryn Estate was privately
purchased and meticulously restored to the bright and beautiful decor of
its original grandeur. Now listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, Pen Ryn offers such amenities as functional fireplaces, air
conditioning, exquisite restroom facilities, a Grand Ballroom, and food
service to rival the finest in dining.
